Floyd Morris, Ph. D., is the Director of the Centre for Disability Studies at the University of the West Indies, past President of the Jamaican Senate and current Opposition Senator, and Special Rapporteur on Disability for the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Morris was first appointed to the Jamaican Senate in 1998, becoming its first blind member. He served in the Senate until 2007 and regained his Senate seat in 2012. He was appointed president of the Senate in 2013 and served until 2016, when he was reappointed as Opposition Senator. Morris led the negotiations for Jamaica at the United Nations on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities from 2002 to 2006 and eventually signed and ratified the convention on behalf of Jamaica in 2007. In 2018, Morris was appointed Special Rapporteur for CARICOM. Morris holds a Ph. D. in Government from the University of West Indies (UWI), where he is the founding director of the Centre for Disability Studies. He has researched inclusion of persons with disabilities in several aspects of Jamaican life and published numerous books and articles.
